I shared my overall inspiration for Baby Girl’s nursery a couple of weeks ago, and since then we’ve made some big decisions! I am 36 weeks pregnant this week and the urge to “nest” is starting to come on strong. I’ve got plans to wash baby clothes and start organizing her little closet this upcoming weekend, and I hope to make some big strides in the rest of the nursery as well! Let me catch you up…
In my last post, I shared a few of the inspiration images I’ve been saving, as well as a bit about our wallpaper saga. To recap, we have wallpaper that we were planning to use in the nursery, but after a quick weekend powder room wallpaper install a few weeks ago, we realized we don’t have enough! Because the wallpaper we have is no longer manufactured in the color we have, we needed to go back to the drawing board.
We ordered a few more wallpaper samples, but after living with them for a few days felt like none of them were even close to what we have, and because we can’t get any more of it, we’ve decided to abandon wallpaper altogether. Kurt and I are not usually ones to quit - especially when it comes to DIY house projects - but we have a time constraint competing with a budget constraint, and the two are just not aligning! Because we didn’t find a new wallpaper that we felt like we absolutely had to have in this room, we took a step back and looked at how we could pivot toward something else as a statement in the room. And we landed on a gorgeous rug instead!
The original wallpaper that we have is the same “Peonies” pattern from Rifle Paper Co., so when we decided to abandon wallpaper in favor of a standout rug, that was the first place I looked. The “Peonies” rug comes in a few different color ways (we liked this one as well but it’s backordered until the end of the year!), but we felt like this version with the grey background and white flowers fits the overall cottage style of our home really well, and looks wonderful with the white nursery furniture that we’ve already received from our registries. We purchased the rug over the weekend and it should be here in the next week or so! Once it’s in the room, we can finalize our paint choice for the walls (maybe one of the shades of green in the rug?) and move forward with finishing this room before my due date in mid-October.
With the rug choice solidified and ordered, I went back to my original inspiration images and realized that we weren’t too far off from what I had originally envisioned this room to be! Here’s what we have ordered or received already, and a few things that I’m considering as we work to finish this room.
We have the crib and matching changing table as gifts from our registries, and I ordered the stacking baskets over the Labor Day weekend during a sale. We’ve also picked up the curtain rod and will use it to hang a set of sheer pink pom-pom curtains that my mother-in-law gave to use at one of our showers. I need to get a blackout shade for the one window in the room to use underneath the curtains, and would love suggestions if you have a blackout shade that you love!
I have a vintage mirror similar in style to the one above, and the bunny print was a part of a bedroom set that I received from a family member when they passed away a few years ago. I’ve held on to it with the intention of using it in a nursery someday, and I’m so excited to find the perfect place to hang it in this room soon!
We’ve also received some of the grey pom-pom bins from our registries, and depending on how storage is looking once I get things set up I’ll purchase the remaining ones that are still on our registries as well. I have a different vintage bookcase that I have painted pink to use for books and some smaller toys, and a taller cabinet that I bought from Facebook Marketplace that I painted in the same shade as well to use for some additional clothing storage! I used Amy Howard Chalk Paint in the shade “Palmer Pink” on both pieces of furniture and could not be happier with the results.
The bunny lamp is something I’ve loved for years, and I may just end up purchasing it myself once we get closer to having things finished - I’ll see what the room feels like it’s missing before making that decision. I’ll eventually add in some accent pillows in grey gingham (I received a beautiful custom pillow from my dear friend Mattye during one of our showers, and I have another gingham pillow in a different room that I’ll pull into the nursery as well) and maybe something like the blue printed one to coordinate with the different shades in the rug.
The only big piece of furniture we still need to make a decision about is a rocking chair. There is one on our registries, but it might end up being outside of our price range to purchase on our own, so I’m regularly checking Facebook Marketplace to see if anything similar pops up that we can get at a lower price. If you have a rocking chair that you love share it with me so I can check it out as well!
Once everything is in the room and organized, I’ll add finishing touches like a DIY felt ball mobile I’ve purchased supplies to make, maybe some more art on the walls, and other nursery essentials like a table for beside the rocking chair, a nightlight and a baby monitor, and the room will be good to go! I am getting so excited to put this room together - it feels like I’ve spent so much time thinking about it over these last few years, it’s a bit surreal to have it as a project we’re actively working on. Mama friends, what have been some of the must-have items in your nurseries? Anything that I’m completely overlooking? Share in the comments!
